To blog is to borrow. And when we borrow, we should always be careful to observe proper attribution protocol. But the respect we owe to the sources that we use to enrich our own sites and pages often lapses when it comes to the treatment we give to their logos and brands.

Many bloggers place recognizable trademarks in their posts to call attention to their use of a reputable source. As ever they were, brands are assets to be protected and maintained with diligence and care. Adherence to basic general guidelines and familiarity with the attributes of any brand or logo you use on your blog, will help to ensure a sustainable "free-use" policy.

As a general rule, you should be careful to select a complete graphic of the logo or brand, just as it would appear on the source's site or in print.

Hot-linking is a benefit to the source, since it returns a positive "trust vote" to the Search Engines. So, HOTLINK.

If you are uncertain which image to use in your hotlink, consult Google Image Search, and select one that is pleasing to you. If you find an image that you like, but it's not on page one, use it anyway. If it is your aim to express gratitude with your hotlinked brand or logo image to the source, they will appreciate you calling the SE's attention to a good image that may have been overlooked.

Here are some tips on the use of brands, logos and trademarks from Google:

    1. Distinguish the trademark from the surrounding text in some way. Capitalize the first letter, CAPITALIZE or italicize the entire mark, place the mark in quotes, use a different type style or font for the mark than for the generic name.

    2. Use the trademark ONLY as an adjective, NEVER as a noun or verb, and NEVER in the plural or possessive form.

    3. Use a generic term following the mark, for example: GOOGLE search engine, Google search, GOOGLE web search.

    4. NEVER modify a mark, for example, through hyphenation, combination or abbreviation, such as: Googliscious, Googlyoogly, GaGooglemania... more
